    Esotericism: understanding its main currents

    Esotericism: understanding its main currents

Hermeticism, Kabbalah, alchemy, theosophy: four traditions that still feed today's tarot, astrology and psychic practice.

    One word, several traditions

Esotericism comes from the Greek esoterikos, "from within". The term originally referred to teaching reserved for a circle, as opposed to what is exoteric, public. It is not a single doctrine but a family of currents that have answered one another for two thousand years.

Knowing their outlines changes how you read a tarot spread or a birth chart: you understand where the symbols come from.

    Hermeticism

Born in Hellenistic Egypt, hermeticism is attributed to the legendary figure of Hermes Trismegistus. Its best known principle fits in one formula: as above, so below.

This is the idea of correspondence between the sky and the human, and it underpins all Western astrology. A planet does not act on you from a distance; it describes the same movement on another scale.

    Kabbalah

A mystical tradition from medieval Judaism, Kabbalah offers a reading of reality through the Tree of Life, a structure of ten sephiroth linked by twenty-two paths.

That number twenty-two fascinated the occultists of the 19th century, who linked it to the twenty-two Major Arcana of tarot. The correspondence is late and debated, but it explains why so many tarot books talk about Kabbalah.

    Alchemy

Long reduced to the search for gold, alchemy is above all a discipline of transformation. Its stages — the black, white and red work — describe a process: dissolve what had set, purify, reunite.

This is the vocabulary many modern readings borrow when they speak of going through a crisis and coming out changed.

    Theosophy and modern currents

At the end of the 19th century, theosophy brought notions from India into circulation in the West, among them karma and cycles of reincarnation. The 20th century extended this with the new age, more syncretic, blending astrology, crystals, meditation and personal development.

Most practices you come across today inherit from that last layer, often without knowing it.

    How to approach these traditions

    Three useful habits:

    • Separate history from myth. Many "thousand-year-old traditions" were formalised in the 19th century.
    • Do not look for total coherence. These currents contradict one another, and that is normal.
    • Keep a critical mind. None of these systems replaces medical, legal or financial advice.

    See these symbols at work

The most telling way is to meet them in a reading. A tarot reading or a birth chart draws directly on this heritage of correspondences.
