Life path in numerology: how to calculate it and what it means

The most telling number in your chart

In numerology, the life path is the equivalent of the sun sign in astrology: it is the number you look at first. It is derived from the date of birth and describes the general tone of a journey, the talents that keep returning and the lessons that repeat.

It does not predict events. It describes a way of moving forward.

The calculation method

Add the day, the month and the year separately, reduce each total to a single digit, then add the three results.

Take 17 March 1984:

• Day: 1 + 7 = 8
• Month: 3
• Year: 1 + 9 + 8 + 4 = 22, then 2 + 2 = 4
• Total: 8 + 3 + 4 = 15, then 1 + 5 = 6

The life path is therefore 6. One exception: if a step gives 11, 22 or 33, you do not reduce. Those are the master numbers.

The nine life paths

• 1 — initiative: autonomy, a gift for starting things, difficulty delegating.
• 2 — connection: diplomacy, sensitivity, a need for a reassuring framework.
• 3 — expression: creativity, social ease, a tendency to scatter.
• 4 — building: method, reliability, resistance to change.
• 5 — movement: curiosity, freedom, a taste for the unexpected.
• 6 — responsibility: care for others, harmony, the risk of self-neglect.
• 7 — enquiry: analysis, inwardness, a need for solitude.
• 8 — power: ambition, a sense of means, an intense relationship with success.
• 9 — openness: altruism, a wide view, difficulty finishing things.

The master numbers

• 11: strong intuition, keen sensitivity, tension between inspiration and reality.
• 22: the capacity to build on a large scale, high demands on oneself.
• 33: a calling to support others, very rare, often read as a reinforced 6.

A master number is not a privilege. It mainly describes an intensity, along with the energy it requires.

What a life path does not say

It says nothing about your job, the people you will meet, or a date. Two people with the same life path will lead very different lives: the number gives a colour, not a script. These readings are supports for reflection and replace neither medical advice, nor a legal or financial decision.
