Why the Major Arcana matter so much

The Marseille Tarot has 78 cards, but the 22 Major Arcana give a spread its backbone. Where the Minor Arcana describe everyday life, the Majors tell the larger stages of a journey: the choices, the trials, the releases. When several of them turn up in one spread, the situation is bigger than a passing worry.

Their order is not accidental. From the Magician to the World, the 22 cards trace a path: someone sets out with everything to learn and comes back changed.

Momentum and building (I to VI)

• I — The Magician: the beginning, tools still scattered, the nerve of a beginner.
• II — The High Priestess: inner knowledge, patience, what ripens quietly.
• III — The Empress: creativity, abundance, the power to bring something to life.
• IV — The Emperor: structure, authority, solid foundations.
• V — The Hierophant: transmission, guidance, the framework you accept.
• VI — The Lovers: the choice of the heart, and what it asks you to give up.

The test of movement (VII to XII)

• VII — The Chariot: drive, victory, a direction finally owned.
• VIII — Justice: balance, the exact consequence of your actions.
• IX — The Hermit: chosen withdrawal, the slowness that brings light.
• X — The Wheel of Fortune: the turning cycle, what no longer depends on you.
• XI — Strength: gentle mastery, the kind that tames rather than breaks.
• XII — The Hanged Man: suspension, a change of viewpoint, fertile waiting.

The crossing (XIII to XVIII)

• XIII — the unnamed arcanum: a necessary ending, never a literal death.
• XIV — Temperance: circulation, slow healing, the right measure.
• XV — The Devil: attachment, passion, what fascinates as much as it holds.
• XVI — The Tower: the abrupt break that frees you in spite of itself.
• XVII — The Star: hope regained, plain confidence.
• XVIII — The Moon: imagination, old fears, what is not yet clear.

Completion (XIX to XXI and the Fool)

• XIX — The Sun: clarity, shared joy, recognition.
• XX — Judgement: the call, renewal, a second chance.
• XXI — The World: fulfilment, the cycle closed.
• The Fool: unnumbered, it moves freely; freedom, departure, sometimes recklessness.

Read them together, not one by one

A single card says almost nothing. What matters is the relationship between cards: the Tower followed by the Star tells a very different story from the Tower followed by the Moon. Watch the proportion too: many Majors point to a defining period, while mostly Minors bring the question back to practical ground.

Finally, a card with a difficult reputation is never a verdict. The Devil questions an attachment, it does not condemn it. Tarot opens lines of reflection; it replaces neither medical advice, nor a legal or financial decision.
